Solving 3rd & 4th Degree Polynomial Equations & Graphing Related Polynomial Functions

Lesson:

265 - 1 Hour 21 Minutes

Summary:This lesson solves 3rd and 4th degree polynomial equations by using common factor, difference of squares, trinomials, the quadratic formula and the factor theorem. The connection is made between the real roots of an equation and the x intercepts or zeros of the corresponding polynomial function. Non-real or imaginary roots are also discussed. Then the polynomial function is graphed by using the x intercepts, the sign of the leading coefficient and the y intercept.

After this lesson, you will be able to:

  • state the difference between a polynomial equation and a polynomial function.
  • solve 3rd and 4th degree polynomial equations using different methods of factoring and the factor theorem.
  • identify real and non real zeros.
  • draw the graph of 3rd and 4th degree polynomial functions using the zeros, x intercepts, and the sign of the leading coefficient and the y intercept.
